    The study of the long-lived and rich civilisations of Ancient Greece, Rome and Late Antiquity is concerned with cultural and historical legacies, and satisfies many intrinsic interests. It may also provide us with new ways of understanding developments and challenges in the modern world. 

    This specialisation will develop your research and advanced analytical skills as you work to solve complex historical problems. You’ll evaluate a broad body of historical information and issues relevant to these states and cultures. You’ll learn about the development of society, religion and politics, and gain in-depth knowledge of the leaders of antiquity, their cities and empires. You’ll also develop knowledge, awareness and respect for contemporary cultural perspectives and cultural heritage practices.

    Key Features

    • This advanced specialisation in ancient history will prepare you for a range of careers. 
    • An excellent preparation for higher degree research, it will provide you with introductory knowledge of at least two ancient languages – study Ancient Greek, Coptic Egyptian or Latin. 
    • Macquarie has the largest ancient history department in Australia, with a large number of expert and world-famous researchers specialising in Ancient Rome, Greece, Egypt and the Near East. 
    • The study of ancient artefacts, including inscriptions, ceramics and coins is fully integrated into this specialisation through the resources of our Museum of Ancient Cultures. 
    • You’ll have opportunities to pursue your own research interests.  
    • You may have the opportunity to participate in archaeological digs in Croatia, Greece, Israel or Italy.
