AU09 Bachelor of Science (Geography Studies) Macquarie University

  • THÔNG TIN CHUNG

Geography is the study of place, space and the environment. Fundamentally interdisciplinary, geography is one of the few disciplines that encompasses very different ways of knowing, including the natural and social sciences, and the humanities. Geographers investigate the character of places, the distribution of phenomena across space, biophysical processes and features, and dynamic relationships between humans and environments. Geographers are, therefore, uniquely equipped to understand and address critical problems facing the world.

This specialisation will give you advanced knowledge and understanding of the social and biophysical processes that shape Australian and other environments. You’ll evaluate data and knowledge from environmental and social sciences, including Indigenous perspectives, to develop geographical ways of understanding contemporary environmental issues. You’ll analyse and synthesise complex environmental, economic, social and political information to enable a geographical understanding of humans, environments and the dynamic relationships between them. You’ll develop critical analysis skills as you apply theories and concepts to case studies, including from the perspective of environmental justice.

    Key Features

    • This flexible specialisation allows you to tailor your studies to your interests by combining units from geography and environmental sciences, and by focusing on particular themes, including climate change, natural hazards, geomorphology, cities, political and cultural geography, development studies and geographic information systems.
    • In addition to in-depth study in geography, you can take optional units in your first year in biological sciences, cognitive sciences, chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics or coding to give you the modern foundational skills relevant to future workforce needs.
    • You’ll increase your employability by developing transferable skills in research methodologies, including reflective research and applied fieldwork, and you’ll become skilled at interpreting data as you seek to generate creative insights and evidence-based solutions to contemporary geographic challenges.
    • You’ll develop your skills in a range of research techniques, which can include fieldwork, survey design, statistical analysis, spatial data analysis (including geographic information systems), and other forms of qualitative and quantitative analysis.
    • You’ll become proficient at retrieving, synthesising and communicating information, as well as managing data and drawing on different sources of knowledge.
    • You’ll have opportunities for field-based learning, including international and remote area fieldwork.
    • You’ll be exposed to Indigenous ways of knowing, providing you with traditional and contemporary approaches for interacting with and caring for Country.
    • You’ll learn how to apply for scientific-based jobs and prepare for interviews, and develop presentation, project management and other critical skills that you’ll need to secure your dream career.
