AU35 Master of Engineering Science (Mining) Curtin University
Mining engineering involves applying skills and knowledge in science and technology to safely and efficiently extract minerals from the earth.
Mining engineers plan underground or surface mining locations, development and exploitation, and coordinate functions and operations related to equipment, services personnel and processes. They design, implement and monitor safe development of mines and use of equipment.
Due to the nature of mining, which disturbs the natural environment to extract minerals, mining engineers must be concerned with mitigating damage to the environment. They must also ensure a sustainable operation that benefits the local community throughout all phases of a mine's life cycle.
Mining engineers may work in offices during planning, before moving on site to oversee the mine development and operation.
This course produces engineers who can design, operate and manage a mining operation. It it suitable if you are looking to develop specialist knowledge in mining engineering, or if you are a current mining professional looking to advance your career.
You will gain detailed knowledge and understanding of core areas of mining engineering, followed by an in-depth exposure to theory and practice in mine geotechnical, and mine planning and management. You will also complete an individual project, under the supervision of an engaged supervisor.
Why study
Careers for mining professionals include in-house specialists in mining and chemical companies, consultants, academics and researchers. Graduates can expect to obtain employment within these sectors or to further their current careers in mining engineering within the minerals industry.
