AU38 Doctor of Education The University of Western Australia
The EdD provides an advanced course of study at the doctoral level. This professional doctorate is focused on the application of advanced knowledge to questions of professional practice. Participants will develop substantial content knowledge in cognate areas related to the kinds of career positions and pathways that they might pursue, along with substantial knowledge of research principles and methods applicable to the field of study. Participants will demonstrate intellectual discipline to think critically, evaluate existing knowledge and ideas, undertake systematic investigation, and reflect on theory and practice to contribute to professional knowledge and practice. Research studies conducted for the EdD can make a contribution to policy, management and professional practice in education. There is only one intake of students per year, and this occurs at the beginning of the year.
The coursework consists of four units. These units offer a comprehensive overview of the role of literature in developing a conceptual framework, major research methodologies, data analysis, and lead to preparation of a draft research proposal for the thesis. On successful completion of these units students move into the thesis component of their study. Students receive extensive and thorough supervision throughout the course.
Graduates may move into a range of careers as the EdD is a demonstration of a graduate's ability to conceptualise and implement an independent program of research, manage a project, organise resources, work with other people and communicate effectively in writing at a high level. These careers could include leadership, management and tertiary education.
