BA English & World Literatures is a new and exciting degree that allows you to explore not only English literature and language but also literatures and cultures from around the world. You’ll get to choose from an extensive range of modules, covering works across time, cultures, genres and geographies. These courses will help you to perceive the particularities of national literary traditions in relation to the global circuits in which they circulate. All works studied will either be written originally in English or translated into English, meaning you’ll be able to engage with texts from diverse cultures and reflect on the challenges and imperatives of literary translation without needing to have additional language skills.

As well as being a journey of global literary discovery, the course is also highly interdisciplinary – as a joint honours student you’ll be part of both the Department of English and the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures. The nature of the course also means that you’ll frequently have the opportunity to step into different fields, examining documents from archives, oral history interviews, visual arts, and film. 

You will be taught by nationally and internationally known scholars who write prize-winning books, talk or write in the national media, or advise cultural bodies.  Together we create a supportive environment, often using group work so you can try out new ideas and participate in lively discussions. Throughout your studies, you will receive personal guidance to ensure your course is aligned with your strengths, interests and career plans. As part of our close-knit international community, you will be able to get involved with an array of cultural initiatives that take place on campus and make the most of being within easy reach of London and its many events and attractions.

On graduation, you will be ready to pursue a career in a wide range of areas including publishing, marketing, the media, journalism, arts administration, fashion, international management, the civil service, accountancy or teaching.  Alternatively, you may choose to continue your studies.
